You should have no trouble tracking one down, either, because the
Focus 1.6-litre Zetec was the most popular version of the UK’s biggest-selling car.
When it arrived in 1999, the Focus went straight to the top of the class thanks to its excellent combination of value and quality, and it was still ahead of the field when it was replaced in 2005. The first cars are now reaching bargain basement prices. And as long as you find one that has been cared for, the sweet 1.6 engine is good
for well over 100,000 miles.
Zetec models get stiffer suspension and sports seats, and offer a sharper driving experience than base LX cars. But air-conditioning wasn’t standard, so go for a model with the optional climate pack, which also includes a heated windscreen and door mirrors.
There are few weaknesses, although boot space is modest. And you should look to replace the cambelt before the 100,000-mile/10-year interval – 60,000 miles or six years is far more sensible.
