With CO2 emissions of only 87g/co2 Volkswagen is promising its Polo Bluemotion model will be the cleanest supermini money can buy when it goes on sale in the UK next year.

Due in dealers by February, Volkswagen is also promising the car will return up to 82mpg - making it the world's most fuel efficient five seat car.

Powered by an updated 1.2-litre three-cylinder TDI engine developing around 72bhp, the Polo also gets 15-inch wheels, low rolling resistance tyres and a special aerodynamic bodykit.

Also new to the Polo Bluemotion is regenerative braking, plus an automatic stop and start system.

Prices for the newcomer are still to be confirmed. However a spokesperson for the firm suggested drivers will need around £11,000 to get behind the wheel.
