Ford Focus Electric spied

Ford’s electric Focus snapped testing in the US ahead of its launch here in 2012.

Despite the exhaustive testing, this Focus is missing a key component – its exhaust pipe! Our spies have just captured this Focus Electric mule undergoing testing, and it’s the first we’ve seen that uses the new mkIII Focus bodyshell.

Along with the blanked-off rear bumper, the car features disguises over the area where the fuel filler cap is on both sides, which could mean that the Focus Electric will feature plug sockets on both side of the car, making recharging easier.

Ford began its Focus Electric project with the launch of a number of prototypes based on the current generation car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Called the Focus BEV, it had boot-mounted 23kWh lithium-ion batteries which powered a 134bhp electric motor. The range is 100 miles and top speed is 85mph.

At this year’s Geneva show, Blue Oval bosses confirmed that the Focus Electric will be based on the new Focus, and will go on sale in the US in 2011, before arriving in the UK in 2012.

Expect the production Focus Electric to feature similar specs to the BEV prototype, which will put it on a par with the Nissan Leaf for range and performance. The electric Ford will join an electric version of the Transit Connect, and is followed by two next-generation petrol hybrid-electric vehicles and a C-MAX plug-in hybrid in 2013.

How much for this German made Focus?

Most important information omitted by Auto Express THE PRICE, and how much discount has the poor tax payer got to cough up SUBSIDIZE each German produced Focus.

Electric obviously helps the problem of air born pollutants caused by the internal combustion engine, so for the local environment it will have a positive impact. But, it doesn't really help the overall c02 picture, given that the majority of electric power in this country is still being produced by coal fire power stations.

@nickeroo

Yet another one bleeting on about coal fired power stations who clearly can't use Google or a calculator.

If you could, you'd find that:

1) Coal is not the majority fuel for electric power, it is under a third and falling.

2) The LEAF (which like the article says, is very similar in spec) emissions are better than a Prius or Focus diesel and this will only get better as the electricity grid is cleaned up.

This doesn't include any stuff like energy used to turn crude oil into petrol or diesel, which adds another two thirds onto the emissions for those cars.

So electric does help now and helps more as cleaner types of power station come online.

Besides, I'd rather not keep sending 10% of my salary to OPEC every month.

Jaguar, The Green Avenger...

Jaguar may be onto something with their Gas Turbine powered supercar. Take a look at its emission figures, they're below 30g/km. If this tech can be shoe-horned into a more practical body, it'll pull off a bit of a coup by managing to keep the oil companies happy as well as satisfying the Green fraternity for now...

As for the Focus? Forget it... It's hideous to look at, in electric guise, it'll be hideous to drive, and it's a given you will run out of juice before you reach your destination. Definitely not for me...

Just to point out somthing here, But dont most plastics used in cars bottels etc come from crude oil , And then you have making the metals for the car caused by heating up raw ores to really hot tempartures ether using coal or gas to do it?

So really saying any car is low C02 is rubbish because the process to make it is dirty and ful of fossel fuels.

And thats before you get in to how much costs and efforts and energy is used to make batterys which are not exactly eviromentaly friendly ether with all the toxic cemicals sloshing around the world to make them.

sparky, before you go getting all eco-warrior, learn to spell, perhaps that way perhaps people will take you seriously. What's the matter no spell check?

By Shaun34 on 25 December, 2010, 8:50am

shaun34, point 1 im not an eco warrior im tired of people telling me how green these cars are and how much better the world will be without oil. and second im dyslexic which means i could look at a spell checker for weeks and still spell stuff wrong.

Unfortunaly im a product our a rubbish education system that insist on only helping the people that they can get the best grades from

By sparky1982 on 29 December, 2010, 8:26pm

The point i was trying to make is that if you want a zero cO2 emission car unless you find someway of making it without burning any sort of energy in its building, and then find away to produce a system for it to move that dosnt require toxic cemicals that have to be shipped round the world.

Just think of all the problems there will be when these cars come to the end of the life in disposing of all the cemicals that come with them.

I just want sombody to actual be honest and take into account everything that gose into the car rather than just what comes out of the tail pipe.

And just on it if oil is that short we need to look at solutions for a vast amount of things we use every day.

And im also looking forward to loads of insurance clames in the coming years for people tripping over electrical cables running from flats, house at work and in the street so people can charge up there cars.
