The ultimate hot Astra is storming into view. This is Vauxhall's new three-door model, tagged the GTC, which we've spied testing on roads around the Nurburgring circuit in range-topping VXR form.
Just like the GTC Paris concept car – revealed at last year's Paris Motor Show – it's a striking looking machine with a coupe-like profile. The VXR version adds a bodykit and will boast a revised and uprated 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with around 300bhp – a huge increase on the outgoing 237bhp VXR model.
Channelled to the front wheels via a sophisticated limited-slip diff and with a version of the Insignia VXR’s torque-taming HyPerStrut system to maximise traction in corners, it should do 0-60mph in less than seconds with a top speed of 160mph. In other words, Ford Focus RS performance.
Huge Brembo brakes with cross-drilled discs will provide the stopping power. Sales will start in the UK before the end of 2011.

"should do 0-60mph in less than seconds"?
How many seconds are we talking here?
I know that the car it hiding its looks with all that camo. But it doesn't seem to look as aggressive as the previous VXR or the Focus RS.
Could be the classic mistake of trying to be more grown up?
I think only the VW Golf ever pulle that trick off in the hot hatch group.
The VXR Astra is to go against Ford ST. Once again the VXR will give more power but it wont beable to plant it. Unlike the ST with its better chassie and can deliver the power
Vauxhall start off with good basic designs and good motors, then all go off to drink numpty juice, go back to work and make a complete Horlicks of the details and the road manners. But, could it be, just this once... (I know it's really Opel, but we can't always blame the Germans, can we?)
Funny how people (including Clarkson) love to stick the boot in VX.
The truth is Opel are the people who design and make these cars.
But being German we cann't criticise them in any way.
It's more PC to blame VX if the car is unreliable and lacking style.
Let's wait and see shall we? I have a feeling Vauxhall/Opel are going to nail this one having talked to someone close to the project. From what I've heard a lot of nay-sayers could be having to eat humble pie, even Jeremy Clarkson...
