The Polo R WRC will make its racing debut at the Monte Carlo rally

Along with revealing a special-edition version of the Polo, Volkswagen has also unveiled its challenger for the 2013 World Rally Championship.

The model has been developed intensively in the 17 months since the Polo rally car concept first appeared in May 2011, with double World Champion and Dakar rally winner Carlos Sainz testing in Germany, Sweden and Spain.

Power comes from a 315bhp 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, as required by WRC technical regulations. The Polo R WRC will debut at next month’s Monte Carlo rally, driven by Frenchman Sebastien Ogier and Finn Jari-Matti Latvala.
