TomTom Go Live 1005 World sat-nav review

This range-topping TomTom takes on traffic and Twitter, but comes at a cost

TomTom Go Live 1005 World sat-nav

Price: £329.99

Contact: www.tomtom.com

The Go Live 1005 World is the most advanced TomTom yet, and we’ve tested it. A hefty £329.99 price tag confirms its top-of-the-range status, but you get a year of free live traffic updates, which cost £47.50 annually afterwards.

What sets this apart from other sat-navs is the ability to see hotel reviews from Trip Advisor and Expedia, and it works with social networking service Twitter. That means you can tell your followers your estimated time of arrival. But it’s tricky to personalise the message.

As an A-to-B sat-nav, the Go Live 1005 World is great. It’s Bluetooth compatible, has unfussy maps and it’s easy to search Google for a destination. The live traffic is useful, but it’s not aware of every snarl-up.

Our main concern is that it takes ages to get back to the map when you’re deep in the menus. The back button is on the left-hand side of the five-inch screen, but it changes to the right side in some sub-menus. This is frustrating when you just want to see your next turn.

Verdict

Rating: ★★★★
What is it?
Top-of-the-range TomTom offers live traffic updates and Twitter connectivity.
Problems?
Hard to return to map from menu, pricey, misses some traffic.
Why buy?
Functionality, accuracy, spots most traffic.
