Gilera Centenary scooters

Price: £3,799 (Nexus); £5,795 (Fuoco); £6,799 (GP800)

Flying the flag – that’s the latest Gilera scooters, which have been launched to mark the firm’s centenary. All three new models come in classic Italian red, white and green.

The cheapest offering is the Nexus, which has a single-cylinder, fuel-injected 300cc engine and new chassis. If you want more power, there’s the 500cc three-wheeled Fuoco.

Topping the range is the 839cc V-twin GP800, which blends full-sized motorcycle pace with the practicality of a scooter.

Drivers switching from four wheels would need to qualify for their bike licence before taking the reins of any of the scooters. Buyers don’t have to be quick off the mark to get one, though, as the range is a special celebration, rather than a limited run.

You needn’t worry about storage space, either, as the Fuoco and GP800 can both fit a full-face helmet under the seats. The Nexus struggles with anything bigger than a laptop bag, so you may want to choose one of the optional top boxes.

 * Maker’s claim: “The new designs celebrate Gilera’s 100th birthday, with a unique logo and special tricolour livery, to emphasise our Italian racing heritage.”
