Roof boxes

Planning a family holiday? Then let the best roof boxes take the strain of your luggage. We reveal the best.

Now is the time that thoughts turn to that summer break, but will your car be up to getting the family and its luggage wherever you are planning to go? If it is likely to come up short let a roof box take the strain. Most cost just a few hundred pounds and work out a lot cheaper than driving around in a big car all year just for two weeks in summer. You can read our indepth review here, but we've summarised the results below.

Winner
Kamei Husky XXL
Contact: 01539 621884, www.roofbox.co.uk
Price:£249.95
Big is best when it comes to roof boxes and this giant Kamei boasts an impressive 510 litres. Some rivals may have more features but the Husky works for us especially at this price. And for those with limited storage space the base slips inside the top. A worthy winner.

Commended
Kamei Corvara 390K Duolift
Contact: 01539 621884, www.roofbox.co.uk
Price:£279.95
It might lack the big numbers of some but the clever shape means the space is very usable easily accommodating all our test luggage. You might pay a little more than our champ but you do get double-sided opening, quick-fit fasteners for the roof bars and self latching locks which release centrally with a single key.

Hapro Roady 422
Contact: 01539 621884, www.roofbox.co.uk
Price:£144.95
If our other two award winners are too much for your budget then this Hapro is the one for your break this summer. It costs under £150 yet took all our test luggage and was well made. Font hinged lid may be a bit old fashioned these days but it gives good access for loading and fitting to the roof bars.
