Phone sat-navs

Phone sat-navs are a viable alternative to standalone systems. We reveal the best.

Smartphones have taken sat-nav developers in a new direction as improvements to screens, speakers and GPS aerials made them a viable alternative to standalone systems. The soaraway success of the iPhone saw makers rush to develop applications or apps for all the common platforms and here’s our pick of the best. To view the rest of the group test, click here

Winner
Ovi Maps
Contact: www.ovi.com
Price: Free
While rivals are charging £50 plus, a free sat-nav app that works well is compelling and that’s just the case with Ovi Maps for Nokia handsets. It is easy to use and guidance is clear with quick rerouting. For a free app it is also well integrated switching easily when calls came in and keeping the maps running.

Commended
Co-Pilot Live 8
Contact: www.alk.eu.com
Price: £26.99
Hand-held sat-nav specialist Co-Pilot has not been left behind in the rush to deliver route finding for smartphones and Live 8 worked well on our HTC Touch 2 handset. Like our winner it is well integrated in to the phone’s other functions and makes some rival look expensive at this price.

TomTom
Contact: 0845 161 0009 www.tomtom.com
Price: £59.99
Market leader TomTom’s app for the iPhone seemed a long time coming but it was worth the wait. The familiar TomTom interface has moved seamlessly to the Apple smartphone and it allows other functions like the iPod or calls to be used at the same time as the sat-nav. Top quality but at a price.
