BMW 1 Series xDrive diesel review - pictures
The BMW 1 Series now has the look of a smaller 3 Series thanks to a mid-life update to keep the popular premium hatch fresh.
From the rear, the 1 Series gets a reshaped bumper and larger, i8-inspired tail-lights.

You'll struggle to notice any changes in the cabin, with the same logical layout and solid build quality as before. In comparison to the minimalist Audi A3 Sportback, the 1 Series lacks a little bit of sparkle inside.
From the inside, the 1 Series is a hushed and refined place to spend time, with the 2.0-litre 120d about as muted as a diesel can get, especially when mated to the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Rear seat passengers might find room in the back a bit tight. There's plenty of headroom, but there's only just enough legroom for adults and the high middle seat means you'll struggle to comfortably squeeze in three abreast.

Sharper front bumper, tauter lines and crisper LED headlamps contribute to a quality look for the facelifted 1 Series.
There are five new diesel models available, including a three-cylinder 116d, powered by a 1.5-litre, 115bhp powerplant. There are also four petrol engines.

The 120d is expected to be the most popular model, putting out 187bhp, but still returning an impressive 62.8mpg and 119g/km of CO2 in the xDrive model.
There's plenty of traction from the xDrive four-wheel drive system, while 50:50 weight distribution keeps everything in check at speed. Optional adaptive dampers are also available to tweak settings between Eco, Comfort and Sport modes

New wheel designs are available in the facelifted 1 Series to keep the look fresh.
The 120d is predicted to be the best-seller in the range, thanks to hot-hatch pace and low running costs.
