Doctors named as Britain's worst drivers

Doctors named as Britain's worst drivers

Doctors have been named as Britain's worst drivers for the second year running.

According to data from insurance comparison website Go Compare, GPs have the highest proportion of claims of any occupation in the UK.

The study by the company found that doctors took the top spot with more than a quarter of them (28 per cent) making a claim in the past three years. This is double that of the national average of 14 per cent.

Call for stricter regulation of car write-offs

While GPs topped the list for the most claims, the health profession made up a large chunk of the top ten with health visitor, dental surgeon and hospital consultant all making an appearance.

Doctors may have been at the top of the list, but car dealers came out as the least likely to make a claim on their car insurance with just 3.95 per cent of car dealers making a claim in the past three years.

Other occupations ranking in the list with a claim lower than the national average included couriers, car valets, van drivers, painters, plasterers and professional footballers.

Cat D cars and insurance write-offs explained

Matt Oliver, car insurance spokesperson at Gocompare.com, said: "While it's ironic that GPs risk landing themselves a trip to the hospital by having their mind on their patients while driving, this study really highlights the importance of being in the right state of mind when behind the wheel.

"Driving while stressed, tired or angry can easily lead to accidents. What's more, if it is deemed that you were at fault for an accident due to negligence when behind the wheel, your insurer may not pay out for a potential claim and you could even face criminal prosecution."
