Overall, the defender does perform well off-road, however it feels dated under the bonnet or otherwise and hence, has high running costs.
The engine in the Land Rover Defender is a dated 2.2-litre diesel, with returns of only 25-28mpg and high CO2 emissions of up to 289g/km.

All the variants provide good space for the passengers seated in the rear, however driving position is a little cramped.
