Nissan Note

Winner: Nissan Note, commended Honda Jazz and Skoda Roomster

Buying a small car doesn’t have to mean compromising on space – just take a look at the current crop of supermini MPVs. The market has grown in popularity so much that last year we introduced a new award specifically for these smaller multi-purpose vehicles. And it’s 2006’s winner, the Nissan Note, which retains its crown.

From launch it was obvious that the Japanese company had hit the nail on the head when it comes to family-friendliness. The model also set new benchmarks for equipment, space and driving dynamics.

The sharp styling, arching roofline and prominent nose give it an athletic look that’s anything but MPV. Get behind the wheel and you’ll find the driving position is very car-like, and this is complemented by the Note’s compliant ride and assured handling.

But its trump card is the flexible interior. Features such as the clever twin-boot storage, sliding rear seats and tray tables boost versatility. Legroom in the back is excellent, too – in fact the Note puts many larger MPVs to shame. Two petrol engines and a refined diesel are available – add in generous levels of kit along with legendary Nissan build quality and it’s obvious why the marque is on song again with the Note.
