Give the car a workout on poorly surfaced roads, as the suspension can creak and dampers have a habit of failing. Get any repairs done as part of the deal.

Check footwells for water as door seals often fail, causing leaks into the cabin. Soggy carpets aren’t serious, but what about the metal beneath?

Manual transmissions can be problematic, especially on diesels, as they have more torque to transmit. Check that there is no audible rumbling or whining.

If there’s an original ‘Individual’ radio fitted, check that the display  works properly, as they frequently become illegible. The cheapest fix is an aftermarket unit.
