Engine reliability has been wonderful, apart from a timing belt change when I bought it, and a new set of tires, it's been generally okay. i've had problems with imitation brake discs and pads but that's been rectified, and the tires I put on it (pirelli) are horrendously bad quality. general wear and tear, really. the largest problem I've had is the fact that an idiot replaced the steering rack, and when I had it changed, it had it's powerflex bushings stolen, leaving me scared half to death about clicking noises appearing whenever I steered the car while stationary. however, this is not the car's fault. - it does have 124,000 miles now and this is wear and tear, not a major defect that left it totally unusable. On fuel consumption, it's brilliant, the six speed gearbox allows for alot of flexibility, parts could be cheaper from the agent, but third-party manufacturers like febi bilstein, and meyle make up for this difference. sometimes these parts exceed volkswagen's formel q quality system, or meet it.

The car is an automatic (Tiptronic) diesel estate. I am disabled with a permanent arthritic condition and it makes my life a lot easier and means I can continue to work. I bought an estate as I had a manual version previously as we have two medium sized dogs and it is a good vehicle for transporting them. My main issue with it is related to this, however, as the estate door is difficult to open using the central locking and usually needs to be opened using the child lock, which can be a problem with two boisterous dogs. It does not have a sun roof, which is helpful for dogs, but has so much else I can't really complain. I would have one again and again.

Nice car to drive ,comfy, practical pretty good performance without compromising the economy!which is impoertant as I use it for work.
Problem is that I have seen more of the VW mechanics than I would of liked! as its has quite a few mechanical faults along the way wjich I did not think I would of had being a suposedly reliable golf! I mean even my seatbelt broke the other day! I have never heard of anyones seatbelt braking before! so just go's to show vw did not build this car as well as previous models! like i say nice car to drive and is comfy/sporty but build quality lets it down slot!!

I purchased a '04 Golf (<30k miles), in May '09, following redundancy, having had a string of German cars in the past, their reputation and reliability attracted me, therefore spent a bit more going through a main dealer, Loders in Yoevil. The car has been plagued with numerous problems ranging from: knock sensors x2, air con unit, mirror switches x3, radiator & sundry, radio etc. All problems have been dealt with and Loders in the main have been very good, however I was expecting considerably more of the car itself

A practical car with good build quality but rather boring.
Issues:
Seat seat base is inclined back making long journeys uncomfortable.
Rear seats do not fold flat giving uneven load space.
Not as reliable as I expected:
Coil problem due to faulty batch, took dealer months to admit and replace.
Replacement radiator outside warranty - ouch!
Oil leak from gearbox - living with as v expensive to fix.
Remote unlocking went awol on drivers door.
Windows sometimes motor open without asking!

Generally, a good car, however, very little ground clearance which matters when driving in a rural location as it is common to have to go onto a rough grass verge to pass. A fault in the Radio/CD results in the radio switching itself on even when the engine is switched off which makes it necessary to always leave a CD in it to prevent this. This was also a fault in a previous Seat model so obviously hasn't been addressed properly.

Good car to drive and be a passenger in. However, the build quality is a major drawback for me. VW are supposed by known for building good quality cars. The MkV Golf is not a good example of that. Squeeks and rattles all over the place. Fixed by the dealer on a numwer of occasions. I owned a Mazda 3 before this and wish I had stuck with it. Not a single squeek or rattle in that car in the 3 years of ownership.

Unusual problems, such as poorly bonded body panels leading to water ingress into the cabin. poor tyre wear, requiring regular checking of tracking.esp fault which required expensive repair (replacement of abs unit), note this last fault is widespread throughout the vag range, which the manufacturer have done nothing about. Fuel economy good, long life service intervals let down by expensive servicing costs.

Golf GT 170.

Great car...but, the turbo is not very smooth when the boost builds. I think I have a sticking valve which appears to be quite a common problem. I plan to have the garage check it. Apart from that, I really like the car. Next car will be DSG though, from zero to 30 and back to zero requires 10 gear changes unless you skip some gears which I do often. 2-3-5 or 1-2-3-5 for example.

We needed both a diesel and an Auto to suit my wife's driving needs. That we were able to combine them in an Estate version was the icing on the cake.
It's an excellent car and with almost no exceptions it has proved to be everything we had hoped for. We bought VW because of our experience in borrowing and driving my sons partners Passat. It has proved to be a very good direction to take .

Epected more from a Golf, in terms of reliability and build quality. Interior and plastics have worn well, but mechanically not brilliant and a few too many squeaks and rattles. Economical, but not the sharpest drive nor the most pant igniting. Recently developed 'reverse childlocks' on the backdoors ensure they cannot be opened from the outside, but work fine from the inside.

very happy with the car.it is my first new car and first volswagen.i am very impressed with the build quality and just how comfortable it is.nothing has gone wrong in two years everything works the same as when i bouhgt it new.the only point i would make is the fuel cap seems a bit fiddly when resting on the fuel cover but apart from that i would buy a similar model again.

Generally my car has been reliabe but there have been a number of issues that have led me to question its overall reliability, including a failed ecu when only 4 years old at approx 80000 miles, and persistent intermittent turbo problems. The car is generally reasonable in terms of costs but a new ecu cost ł1100 which is a very big unexpected bill on a 4 year old car.

At 3 years old and 3 weeks the engine developed a serios fault, vw accepted liability as it was a component failure which "should not have happened", however refused to pay all labour charges even though a fault that could have been the start of this was reported during the warranty period but dismissed by vw technicians. Parts are expensive.

After sales service good but I'm disappointed in the car and there are things I'm uneasy about that the garage can't detect or see as normal. Two major jobs done under the warranty also. Might seem a small thing but the choice of colours was very conservative and although I offered to pay more for a light blue this wasn't possible.

Its a pleasure to drive, its very quick when it needs to be, it feels solid, the quality of the initerior is like new despite being 4 years old and it looks great parked out the front of my house. its been a bad buy alround. the performance of the car has been disappointing in all ways. there has been a couple of niggling problems, firstly oil seals int he turbo, followed by an oil sensor warning light coming on for the 3rd time in 6 months, which so far hasnt been rectified, and now the flywheel is slipping.

Very cheap car to run, a litle under powered for body size, the style is a classic iconic design. The vehicle returns an average of 38 mpg. Only problem I have had has been with the heated seats, the element burnt through, burning my trousers, the local VW garage made no comment.
