  • Rating:
Hyundai is taking a more daring approach with the new i30 – whereas the current car is dull, but worthy, the new model remains worthy, but with a great deal more pizzazz.

From the fancy LED driving lights, through some striking and pronounced curves around the front wheelarches and down the flanks, to a pert and attractive rear end, the look is smart and very European. Which is spot on for a car that’s built in Europe – the Czech Republic to be precise.

It’s a similarly stylish story inside, where high-quality, soft-touch plastics adorn an attractive cabin that’s a lot like Hyundai’s bigger Mondeo-rivalling i40.

And there’s much to like – the layout is clear and the driving position is good, but the view over your shoulder is challenged by the narrowing window line, a victim of those curvy lines.

It’s a good job the top two trim levels (Style and Premium) will have a standard reversing camera, with the pictures displayed on the standard sat-nav system.

In fact, standard is a word you tend to use a lot when talking about Hyundais – leather and a glass roof were also on the Premium car we drove. Even entry-level Classic and level two Active will come generously kitted out for the cash.

The range will kick off at around £14,000 when the i30 goes on sale in March, starting with a 1.4 petrol. There’s also a 1.6 petrol plus two 1.6 diesels – we drove the more powerful 128bhp diesel rather than the 110bhp version, but they share excellent economy and CO2 figures of 76mpg and 97g/km, so are exempt from road tax.

The diesel impresses with its refinement on the move and the smoothness of its power delivery, but there’s not too much of it – it’s not especially punchy. Nor is the car a great handler, with quite a bit of body roll and steering that turns the car well enough, but fails to provide much feel of the road.

This isn’t a sports car, though, and for most people the handling and steering will be just fine. They’ll be more interested by a ride that just edges on to the firm side of comfortable.
What everyone will enjoy is the amount of space – the i30 has room for five and one of the biggest boots in the class.

Body Roll and poor steering feel yet four stars?? I smell a rat

Bug ugly

Looks ugly to me. The current version is actually more attractive. I think this design is likely to put off potential buyers, unless partially sighted. Why do so many new cars have the face of a grasshopper and the shape of a trainer?

HYUNDAI MAKING NICE CARS FINALLY ABOUT TIME THEY'VE BEEN TRYING FOR GOD KNOWS HOW LONG GOOD ON THEM !

LOOKS STYLISH & A BARGAIN PRICE ASWELL.

The current model i30, which I have, has little body roll on corners. Is the new model's suspension changed to make it softer ? I'm surprised.

Mine rides fine over potholes already.

Don't pay much attention man, autobild/autoexpress is a joke as far as incosistency and VW promotion goes. I just read the german version of the i30 first drive and they compared it to the golf (who gives a fuck) only to find that the golf is better (when it had nothing to the i30...not even on quality, especially not on engine noise) and that ford and opel should be worried!

WHAT? Who asked you about ford and opels or rather the fridge looking golf.

Whoever looks to the i30 has already scratched the golf from his list for various reasons.

And if somebody should be worried it should be VAG's less expensive brands like skoda.

Didn't VW keep mentioning reliability in their ads a few years ago? Now they are less reliable then Skodas or Hyundais.

For day-to-day transport in this class this has to worry VW. Their boss seemed to be astonished by the new Hyundai i30 quality at its first motor show outing. :)

128bhp diesel with 97g/km CO2 ??

are you sure about these figures? 128bhp 1.6 diesel engine only putting out 97 g/km sounds pretty impressive - and perhaps unlikely?
VW only manage 105bhp and 109 g/km from their 1.6 TDi.
Think this car looks quite good for the money!

By AJD_84 on 26 November, 2011, 9:42am

128 bhp with 97 g/km is not that far off than 105 and 108. Better engine better quality of combustion means more power less CO2 etc. It's been this way since always. I bet, some tweaks like longer gearing, aero tweaks and stop start could help to that.

Driven the petrol saloon in Dubai...

......and its a very very good car. The old order should be scared.

What U Smokin

Crystalball i think that description fits the new BMW 1 series spot on now that is one ugly car.
I think this car is the Elantra in the States and they love it.
It looks great from any angle and a dam sight better than a 'Darth Vader' Focus.

By armac31 on 27 November, 2011, 6:37pm

Not a long term thing

My last car was a Kia Cee'd. it was very good for the money. Could have been better finished in some areas and whilst it did not let me down, after three years creaks and rattles begun to emerge. I now have a solid well built well equipped new Golf mk 6. Good luck to the Korean brands but i'm afraid its not my cup of tea.

By bibbyg on 27 November, 2011, 10:39pm

4 stars???

I was surprised at all the good comments you made on the Astra GTC and then gave it a 4star rating. Now you rate this body roll, no feel a 4star also? Like david_tongue said up on the list, rat smell. Get it together guys, we're looking for honest reviews.

Fish face

Nice car but Hyundai always seems to get ot wrong around the grill area.

By toycollector on 29 November, 2011, 8:00am

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

From the pictures it looks as if there is little room in the back for your knees and the driver looks as if he has been wedged in behind the wheel. Styling by numbers, aggressive front end, no windows at the side and back so you need sensors to park the thing. And who says £14000 is cheap?

By yellowbear on 29 November, 2011, 8:10am

Radical Rhinoplasty Required

This car looks good - in a typically far-eastern way - from every angle except the front. The fussy crossbar separating the grills spoils the nose-on view.

And £14k as a starting price seems a little steep. If the base model is that much, the tested version will probably be nudging £20k. That's still a lot for a High'n'Dry, even though they're now much better.

I Like It!

I actually like it, and it looks much better inside too!

The Golf is not good value any more and it looks boring, but it is a better quality car, just the I30 isn't that far behind any more.

It's better than the Focus too, the focus might take bends at 80 mph, who cares ? I don't drive like I want to kill someone, and I don't like bone shattering suspensions either!

But I prefer the smoothness of the I30 Diesel and I believe the 128 ps output. Don't forget Fiat make a 1.6 120 ps diesel for the bravo, and it is very smooth also better than vag, or Ford's Diesels, only thing is the I30 is the only one in this class that is chain cam, at least the old one was so I doubt they switched to belt cam.

European manufacturers take note, and reduce the cost of your over priced dull cars!

The Hyundai is 4-5 k Euros cheaper than the Golf and has much better kit. And is chain cam petrol and 1.6 diesel.

It's a no brainer!

good looking

i have to agree that hyundi and kia are starting to make much better looking cars i think with that sales will boom in the uk + the warranty that they both offer.

By dirtdog on 29 November, 2011, 9:57am

i'd switch

i've had seats & vw for past 15 years, currently got jetta 2.0 tdi 140 cr....... i like the look of this just hope they get the price right. i'm looking to downsize to a 1.6 with about 120,30,40 bhp so this is spot on....... can anybody name a better diesel engine than this (1.6) ?? please let me know

By nicky3381 on 30 November, 2011, 12:24pm

Buy One

I owned a 2008 Golf V. What a heap of rubbish.
Can't say enough bad things about it.
Long may Hyundai rise.

By Padre on 1 December, 2011, 1:19am

Still ugly

What U Smokin says:

"It looks great from any angle".

Maybe if you stand on your head and squint a bit. Or maybe of you're a grasshopper (cricket in the US).

By CrystalBall on 2 December, 2011, 3:16pm

Fluidic Style

Well i'm with the majority I like it,
Would probably the best looking car in the world look like a grasshopper too (Aston Martin Virage Volante) ?
Talking of insect inspired cars a 3 door Corsa in black looks like a cockroach so why is it the 2nd best seller?
Oh and a grasshopper is a grasshopper in the USA.

By armac31 on 3 December, 2011, 4:32pm

Miseries of the orient

I don't (off the top of my head) know exactly what a Virage Volante looks like. I can picture a generic Aston Martin, but I don't know the differences between models. I can only assume it's like a big squashed i30. Sounds truly horrible.

Yes, the Corsa in black or any other colour, is pretty ugly. But none of this means that the i30 isn't also ugly. You are, though, right about grasshoppers and crickets. They are the same order but different suborders. But then I've only studied Corixidae and Notonectae (water boatmen) and not Orthoptera, so the confusion is, I think, excusable.

By CrystalBall on 4 December, 2011, 10:15pm

'Deal Prices' shown above - are for the old i30

List prices for the new i30 seem a bit too close to the VW Golf, even allowing that the i30 is better equipped. Might still make sense though if you can get decent discounts.

FIRST OPINION

The i30 can compete with the best on space, style, quality and value. Low emissions and high mpg from the diesel both impress, even if performance is a little flat. Comfort is prioritised over handling, but the i30 is an interesting and tempting alternative to a Focus or a Golf.
