Three really is the magic number at Mazda. These are the first official pictures of the updated 3 hatchback, which is set to make its debut at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy this week.
The second generation of the five-door family car was revealed just days after the saloon version premiered at the Los Angeles Motor Show.
The hatch gets a purposeful look, with a broad nose and large grille dominating the front end. A low roofline and angular flanks provide an imposing appearance – essential if the 3 is to keep its foothold in the small family car market.
It uses a platform similar to that underpinning the Ford Focus, so the Mazda should be among the class leaders for ride quality and handling.
Power comes from the 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol units and 1.6-litre diesel engines used in the current car, while Mazda’s all-new 2.2-litre oil-burner is also available. The latter will be offered in a choice of 148bhp and 182bhp outputs, and both meet the latest Euro V emissions regulations.
Petrol variants will get ‘single nanotechnology’ catalytic convertors in their exhaust systems. The pollution-reducing devices feature fewer rare metals – such as platinum and palladium – in their construction. More efficient transmissions, lower weight and better aerodynamics add to the 3’s green credentials.
Mazda has yet to confirm exactly when the newcomer will go on sale, but it is due to hit dealers by next summer. Prices will be similar to the outgoing car, starting at around £13,000.
