Work on the new Civic has begun! Our spies caught a prototype of the next-generation Honda hatchback out testing in the Italian mountains.
The current model made its debut back in 2005 but has continued to look fresh thanks to its radical design touches, a feature the new car promises to carry on when it arrives early in the spring of 2012.
Because it's such a long way off, the prototype snapped here looks very similar to the old car, and the wheelbase is unchanged, but it does have a slightly wider track overall dimensions won’t differ much from today’s model. this tis
The test car was disguised with a fake front suggesting we’re looking at the old Civic, but one closer look reveals the front bumper is actually mounted yet in front of the real piece that is therefore hidden underneath.
Power will continue to come from four-cylinder petrol and turbodiesel units delivering between 80 and 140 hp. The current 1.3-litre, 115-hp hybrid motor will be carried over for the new model, too.

Is this the same one that has already been released in Australia in a saloon role?
Well a little too early to comment on the ever-green Civics looks and packaging. However I would like to know if Honda has managed to shave off the pounds for the forthcoming Civic to help improve economy, emissions and its overall throttle performance and peppiness?
Will the 4cyl units be of smaller capacity than todays but with the same bhp and torque outputs as current Civic units? (Hoping the the CRZ 1.5 with IMA hybrid power makes it into the Civic rather than the Insights 1.3 unit)
Any news on suspension specs, (especially rear set-up) and if the 3 and 5dr version will be launched simultaneously of one another? And built at Swindon??
Performance versions and Mugen inputs?
With the loss of the S2000, will the Civic spawn a CRX trans top a la the early-mid 90`s Civic?
There are a few question for the super Honda sleuths at AutoExpress to find out, pretty please!
The new design looks rather good actually... Hopefully they will do a reversal of what they did with the current Civic, weight wise. Because if they make it any heavier it will be catastrophic failure on Honda's part.
Let's hope Honda come up with a decent Type R this time. I have still got my 02 EP3 Tyoe R as i remain unimpressed by the current heavier and slower model.
If Honda get this right they can really clean up in this sector as there are curently no decent performance alternatives in the circa £20k price bracket.
There I was thinking they were going to produce the red concept I have been waiting for (see the pictures of the red car) as I would of snapped up one of those at launch. Disappointing so far with the new design unless they go the whole hog. Just changing a few body parts (like ford have done with the mondeo) isn't going to cut it!
Why is this plate in German on the bonnet ? Have the Japanese started speaking German now as their language?
These images suggest the next Civic will look really sharp. However I hope Honda avoid the over fussy design on the current model - inside as well as out. I have had a couple of Civic s in the past but have never been convinced about the current model. As other people have mentioned here Honda should try and make the next model smaller and more importantly - lighter. Also Honda, redesign the suspension on the next model and bin the current cars basic torsion beam set up on the rear.
If the pictures of the red car are an indication of what the new Civic will look like then I won't be buying one. It's horrible, and as far as I'm concerned, a backward step to the current car. The current Civic as AE rightly says is still fresh looking, even after being around fir 5 years. The red car looks dated even before it's been built and looks just like all the other cars which are around at the moment. At least the current Civic manages to look different.
If this is a "NEW" Civic not only has it got the present model`s front but it`s also got it`s sides, back, top and probably underneath!!!
Is this Autoexpress`s idea of a joke or have`nt they noticed.
This is a good example of the "King`s new clothes", tell them anything and they will believe it.
Is this a official concept sketch or one your office made up? The front is off the CRZ concept sketch and the back is very random. From your sketch i really can't see how a 5 door version is possible?
Please can the new Civic have a rear window you can see out of and a wiper would be nice, if you would be so kind. That way, you could save the door mirrors from being the size of a bus's. Can you also ditch the, easily scratched, cheap & nasty plastic of the interior door armrests and switchgear, please?
Finally, is there any chance of an engine that delivers some torque below 4,000 revs?
K thx bye.
Alan, take a closer look at the photos mate. Notice how the wheels don't sit comfortably within the wheelarches on the 'mule'. It's a disguise that's supposed to fool a fool into thinking it's the current car....
GOOD GRIEF!!! 0.0
Agree with Alan Shaw...This looks exactly like the present Civic, unless it is a Mule?...Next Gen...No...Just a face lift..
First off, an apology to AlanShaw...
Sorry mate, I didn't mean to be so rude!!! I have no idea why, but your comment riled me that day, please accept my apologies, It must've been a bad day...
To reiterate though, the car is obviously a mule using the current models' body shell over the development chassis....
I should lay off the caffeine... ;)
Yeah looks the same but also looks pretty covered up, so I cant be sure how it will look. Not that I care much as I just bought one of those new model Si Civics on the 3 year 0% that my local dealer is doing, probably in 3 years they would have perfected this new model but until then pretty happy!
I think my dealer is still doing the offer http://www.bristolhonda.co.uk/special/press.aspx I was tempted with the 4 years free servicing but the 0% worked better for me.
