The long awaited replacement for the Civic has been spied testing. First launched back in 2005, the current Civic, which is manufactured in Swindon, still remains a popular hatchback choice despite the dated design.
Honda have already launched the replacements for the US saloon and sports coupe models at the Detroit motor show in January, but executives from Honda UK were quick to point out the American revisions were solely for the US market and completely separate from our European Civic.
The latest prototype reveals what the front grille, door handles and the entire roofline will look like and more importantly a pair of very headlights with a similar design to those featured in the new US Civics.
Judging by the dimensions of the prototye, it will remain around the same size as the current model with many of the parts being carried over. Power will continue to come from the four-cylinder 1.4 and 1.8 litre petrol units and the 2.2 turbodiesel engine delivering between 80 and 140 bhp.
There are also plans to use the current 115bhp 1.5 litre petrol hybrid setup too, adding the new family hatch alongside the likes of the CR-Z, Insight and Jazz to Honda’s range of hybrids. The next generation of the Japanese hatch is due late this year or in spring 2012 and should retail from around £16,000.

So essentially this is the same car, it certainly looks the same to me. So what do you call something the same size and with many of the same parts as it's predesessor? I call it the same old rubbish... They seem to have lowered the front of this one so it's much closer to the shovel/snowplough look of the 2000 Civic. Perhaps that's a selling point in the UK these days?
Horrid
I like the current car, and this looks similar to it, so I'm happy. However, where is the new peformance model? The US spec Civic Si now gets a 2.4L engine. Put that in the Euro Civic and you've got a new Type R.
How to fool Auto Express: cover the current model with tape!
What on earth does "very headlights" mean? Answer: poor proof reading!!
... simply to have a moan?
@JamesRiley - Is it surprising that there is a similarity? The current Civic has been very popular so why go back to a more boring design similar to those being pumped out by VW/Audi/Ford/Vauxhall etc. The Civic stands alone in it's looks, and whether you like it or not it is instantly recognisable - quite a feat these days.
@JMDonald - How much money would you like to place on it being absolutely identical to the current model? And do you have nothing better to do that just pick out obvious proof reading errors? Get a life.
@MaxedOut - I like the current car too. But as someone involved in the leasing industry I am bored to death by a lot of the stuff coming out of most manfacturers these days and I don't really care too much what I drive, except to say that I have had a current model Type R since launch in 2007 and I have loved it - well at least as much as a biker can actually 'love' a car ;-p
I am seriously underwhelmed by the choice available with which to replace it. Everytime I get into my car it feels like an 'event'. Its not meant to be the fastest on the road, but by heck it's a thrilling ride when you're in the mood. The problem with a 2.4l Type R is the reason why the current one has been consigned to history by the EU - emissions regulations! My only fear and regret is that for Honda to maintain engineering purity in the Type R may mean we won't see its like again.
I just hope that Honda doesn't lose it's nerve and soften the design of the new model.
The only thig I can criticise in the AE reporting is their use of the term 'dated' for the current design - it's not dated at all, it's just become familiar. If it was being launched today instead of 6 years ago it would still cause a stir.
Hope they bring out Type R version - graet car.
If you believe this article then you will believe anything, it`s called grasping at straws when you have no real information which is an AE habit.
