Sharper styling and acres of space - these are the best shots yet of Merc's new family favourite

Mercedes E-Class estate

18th May 2009

The E-Class range continues to expand! We’ve already driven Saloon and Coupe versions of the mid-size Merc, but now we’ve bagged the best pictures yet of the spacious estate. Caught testing in Germany, the car is lightly disguised, with only the headlights and tailgate obscured, suggesting it’s practically ready to enter production.

Expect to see the current crop of engines carried over, including a 6.3-litre V8 for the E63 AMG model with an output of around 500bhp. The E-Class estate is looking to shake off its conservative image, and with pioneering technology shared with the S-Class and sportier lines the E-Class is set to be the new benchmark family wagon when it goes on sale towards the end of the year. We’ll bring you all the details when the car breaks cover in Frankfurt this year – but expect prices to start at around £30,000
