Welcome to record breaking roads, a collection of extraordinary roads from across the globe.
Highway 1, in Australia, is the longest continuous road. It circumnavigates central Oz and is 9,000 miles long.
Originally built by a king, Highway 10 in Saudi Arabia runs for 149 miles devoid of a satisfying apex to clip.
Lombard Street in San Francisco, USA, is the twistiest road on the planet. Originally built in the 1920s as cars of the day could not make it straight up the hills steep gradient…
The slope, which Lombard Street sits on, lasts for only 400m, and takes drivers through 1,440 degrees of turns.
While not officially credited as the highest in the world (due to the record being unclaimed), the roads surrounding Uturunku peak at around 5,790m, so stake a convincing claim to the title.
The lowest road in the world is Route 90 in Israel, reaching 393m below sea level.
The coldest road in the world is the chillingly named Road of Bones in Russia. Steeped in history, snow, and vicious bears, the RoB is not for the faint hearted.
Via Appia in Italy, is the oldest road in the world, dating all the way back to 312 B.C.
Baldwin Street in New Zealand hold the title for steepest road, and therefore the place to go for the ultimate sledging experience. At its steepest, it has a gradient of 1:2.86.
The longest tunnel in the world is the Laedral Tunnel found in Norway. It burrows its way through 15.2 miles of dirt, sand and rocks and cost a reported $113.1 million to complete.
From the outside the Laedral Tunnel doesn’t look like much, but once inside, it’s length is very impressive.
This is the Monumental Axis and is praised with being the widest road in the world. Having a huge central reservation of course helps...
This is the McMurdo station located in Antarctica. The road between here and the Amundsen-Scott station is the made from ice and is the most southern road you can drive.
Norway again showing its awesome tunnel making skills, with the Eiksund tunnel, aka the deepest road tunnel in the world. Interestingly the gradient becomes so steep it is almost twice the allowable gradient for such tunnels in the EU.

World beaters: For Issue 1,509, we listed some record roads, including the longest road bridge, located in Bangkok, Thailand

The Millau Viaduct in France claims the title of tallest road bridge. At its maximum it is 244.96m from the ground, making for one intense game of poo sticks.
