Apps such as StreetPilot are useful, but you can’t simply hold your smartphone to use them while driving. Securing your device in the cabin makes it simpler to use – and the Exogear Exomount promises to do exactly that. We put it to the test.

The maker claims that this mount doesn’t restrict you to attaching it to glass – so we tried it on the dash panel of our test car. The sticky base can be fixed to most flat surfaces, and then you pull the suction
cup mechanism to firmly secure it.

It works well, and the clamp grip accepts smartphones up to five inches wide. This range of adjustment meant it easily accepted our test iPhone, Blackberry and even a sat-nav.

There’s full 360-degree rotation, but the clamp is operated by a switch at the back – which isn’t the most accessible place.

Likewise, the narrow grips hold the device on only two sides, so the phone can move if you press too hard in the wrong place.

Finally, there’s the price. This is a good-looking mount – it comes in white or black – but £20 is a lot considering there are no charging or GPS facilities, unlike some rivals.
