Alloygator rim protectors

Durable plastic clips into place over alloy to protect against kerbing damage

We reviewed Alloygator’s original rim protectors in 2010, and while we liked them, they proved difficult to put on.

Now, the company has a new, easier-to-fit version. And if you’re still not keen, there’s a UK-wide network of trained installers.

We had our Alloygators fitted by Spiros Motor Technicians in north London, and it’s clear the second-generation model is far superior to the original.

There are nine colours, ranging from a discreet silver that blends in with your wheels to a vivid pink. You now get five protectors per pack, too – so there’s a useful spare.

You still have to cut the Alloygators to your own wheel size (they can fit wheels ranging from 13 to 21 inches in size), but the instructions are clear enough and new markings make it easier to see where to cut.

To get the Alloygator on the wheel, our installer deflated the tyre, slipped on the protector and tapped it into place with a rubber mallet. A 2cm gap is left between the ends of the plastic – hidden by a cover – so it doesn’t snap on impact. The tyre is then reinflated.

New metal locating clips add rigidity and the Alloygators stand up well to abuse. Even if you mark them, a keyring tool scrapes away the damage. So these are a good investment for anyone looking to protect a smart set of wheels.

Jaguar will prove the naysayers wrong by building a monolith of design and taste

Jordan Katsianis thinks the criticism of Jaguar’s bold new approach is misplaced. If anything, it isn’t bold enough.
