Bentley Bentayga prototype first drive review - pictures

The Bentley Bentayga was first previewed as the EXP 9 F concept three years ago at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. 

Since then, we've seen countless spy shots of the new uber-luxury SUV, but now we've been behind the wheel of a prototype version.

Bentley admits the Bentayga doesn't have the agility of the Range Rover, but it feels sure-footed up steep gradients. 

We tested the car on road and off-road, and it proved to be pretty capable on both. 

The quick-acting, preise steering reduces the intimidation factor of driving a vehicle so big. 

Disguised Bentley badges can't hide the identity of this huge SUV. 

The looks are set to change from the controversial concept, but cues will be kept and are sure to still ruffle some feathers. 

Up steep hills, the Bentayga slithers slightly at first and then scrabbles its way to the top with ease. 

Seeing a car this size tackle a rock slope is just as impressive as seeing a bear climb a tree. 

Power comes from a brand new 6.0-litre W12 engine, producing in excess of 540bhp and a whopping 720Nm of torque. 

This power means the Bentayga tackles any kind of road with ease, having plenty of shove available at all times. 

Whilst most Bentayga's won't even see any kind of rough terrain, it's reassuring to know the big Bentley has the capability to do so. 

In terms of performance, the Bentayga will sprint from 0-62mph in less than 5 seconds and onto a top speed in excess of 170mph.

Wading through mud is no challenge for the new luxury SUV.
