Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi (2005-2007)

Best tax-busting choices

The UK’s top-selling car is also one of the most tax-friendly – but not all variants benefit from the changes. Some petrol models will be hit hard: the 2.0-litre Zetecjumps £50 in April and will endure another £10 increase in 2010.Generally, all 1.6 TDCi Focuses will see a reduction in road tax nextyear. So will some 1.8-litre diesels, while the 2.0 should remainstatic. But the 88bhp 1.6 looks the best bet, as it has bags of torque.Supply is plentiful, too.

Used price range: £4,400-£11,200
CO2 emissions: 124g/km
2008 tax band/cost: C/£120
2009 tax band/cost: D/£90
