Perodua Kenari review (2000-2010)

Like its Kelisa relative the Kenari is another Perodua based on an old Daihatsu model.

Like its Kelisa relative the Kenari is another Perodua based on an old Daihatsu model. Unlike its smaller relative though the Kenari doesn't offer such an appealing package. Certainly its prices are low, but they're not so low to attract buyers away from mainstream competition. Well equipped the Kenari may be, but against rivals like Fiat's excellent new Panda and numerous budget towncars and superminis it's a no-brainer. The Kenari as a result is a rare sight, and even if you do see one you're likely to forget it. The round headlamps on the boxy body do give it some character, but otherwise it's all a bit toytown, the huge glass area and tall stance affording good visibility but doing nothing for aesthetic appeal.

Inside it's little better, though equipment's good the interior is dated, the quality not a match for newer rivals. The driving experience isn't particularly memorable either, the engine might be economical, but with more than one passenger performance suffers and it's not the quietest too - particularly if you opt for the three-speed automatic. The ride is bumpy too, particularly if you manage to get it up to motorway speeds, more modern rivals eclipsing the Kenari in every way. If you must have a Perodua then the Kelisa is a far more tempting proposition.
