All-Season Tyre Test: verdict and results by category

How our seven all-season tyres fared in each test - and which one was the overall winner?

The false economy of buying a budget tyre is once again illustrated by our testing, which saw the Imperial come last in nine out of 12 tests. Yes, it was better on snow than the summer tyre but an all-season tyre is expected to work all year and overall it fell well short of even the sixth-placed make. That was the Vredestein, which is a good tyre, excellent in the snow but at the expense of wet and dry handling. The Goodyear, a previous winner, was fifth and strong in the wet, but like the Hankook in fourth, also a previous winner, it finds itself behind some great newcomers.

The Bridgestone and Continental tied for second. The former wasn’t all that great for economy but was outstanding in the wet and dry, while the latter proved an excellent all-season tyre in every condition. All were beaten by the outstanding new Pirelli, which managed to score wins on every surface – snow, wet and dry – on its way to an emphatic win.

Winner: Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF 3

Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF 3 Gen-3

In a very strong field the Pirelli stood out, delivering table-topping results in all conditions, including the key wet and dry braking tests, and scoring highly in almost every test. Pirelli has made an exceptional all-season tyre.
