Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 review
Former test winner is still a top performer and the one to have if you’re after a quiet ride and value good wet-braking performance

Last year’s test winner drops to fourth but it could so easily have been another podium for Hankook because there was very little to choose between the evo3 and the Maxxis. The 2021 double winner had the edge in the wet, where we saw a repeat of its impressive braking ability, which did so much to push it towards its first overall win. It had to give best to the Bridgestone, but was a step ahead of the rest of its rivals bar the new Goodyear.
It was also effective around the handling track, with a sharpness that inspired confidence. Grip was a touch behind the Bridgestone but the rear was stable despite strong grip at the front. Encouragingly, there was just a gentle loss of front grip as the limit was reached. The Hankook was less of a force in the deeper-water tests but it was enough to put it ahead of the Maxxis.
The advantage moved to its Taiwanese rival in the dry, with the Korean finishing some half a metre behind in braking and just under a second slower around the track. That sharpness on the wet track was there at the start, but quickly waned as the tyre warmed up. The stability remained, though.
A win in cabin noise just failed to put Hankook back on the podium.
