All-Season Tyre Test: verdict and results by category

Tables show which all-season tyres performed well where, and how they compare

Verdict

Unusual conditions – with the snow testing much warmer than in previous years, and a wet track close to freezing – no doubt played a role in our scores, which saw tyres jumping up and down the results tables, with no one brand dominating.

Uniroyal brought up the rear, but still managed a couple of wins. Overall it is showing its age and needs updating. The Kleber was the tyre to have on snow, but couldn’t repeat that on other surfaces, as its CrossClimate stablemate does.

The next four tyres were very closely matched and a small change in weighting would likely see their positions swapped.

Good progress has been made with the All Season SF 2 after a disappointing debut, and, although Hankook failed to deliver the snow performance we’ve seen before in this year’s conditions, it remains a sound choice. Firestone shone in key tests and is the one for high-mileage drivers.

There was another podium performance from the CrossClimate 2, which just needs a bit more wet grip, and Vredestein showed again its Quatrac is a real all-round choice.

Winner: Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3

The Gen-3 finally follows its predecessor with a test win and a performance ideally suited to the British climate, where snow is a rarity and the temperatures are relatively high.
