New 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake spied undisguised

New Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake estate has been spied during its winter testing programme, ahead of its official launch later this year

Our spy photographers have spotted an uncamouflaged Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake for the first time – an all-new model that was confirmed by Volkswagen executives back in 2018. The finished product is expected to make its official debut in late 2020, before going on sale next year.

The styling of this Arteon Shooting Brake development vehicle is identical to the saloon up to the B-pillar, sharing the same long bonnet, wide radiator grille and enormous front doors. However, at the rear, there’s a new sloping roofline, a fresh tailgate, a new quarter light window and a pair of updated tail lights.

Back in 2017, Volkswagen executive hinted that the new Arteon estate could usher in a larger, more powerful six-cylinder engine. However, given Volkswagen’s recent push towards eco-friendly vehicles, it now looks more likely that the company’s flagship estate will feature the same 215bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain as the new Skoda Superb iV instead.

The rest of the Arteon estate’s engine line-up will feature the same range of petrol and diesel engines as the existing saloon. The entry-level powertrain will be a 148bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, while the flagship model will sport a 268bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel-drive system.

Inside, the new Arteon estate will feature the same level of technology as the saloon, with mid-range Elegance models sporting Volkswagen’s 12.3-inch digital instrument binnacle and 9.2-inch infotainment system as standard. Rear headroom and boot capacity should be improved over the saloon model, too, thanks to the Shooting Brake’s extended roofline.

Volkswagen has positioned itself as the more premium mainstream brand within the VW Group and closer to the likes of Audi in terms of prestige than Skoda or SEAT. The Arteon was VW’s first real push into a premium area of the market where there is potential for large volume – and this new Shooting Brake model is designed to broaden the model’s appeal by acting as an alternative to the Audi A6 Avant.
