VW Golf R Estate review - pictures

What's most impressive about the Golf R Estate is just how accomplished it is on the road. 

It's powered by a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, putting out 297bhp and driven through all four wheels. 

There's little to mark the R out over standard Golf models, but it's a pleasant place to be with great quality materials.

Inside, space is unchanged over the standard Estate so there's plenty of room in the back. 

For just £695 over the hatch, the Estate gains a 605-litre boot. 

Thanks to 4MOTION four-wheel drive, you don't have to ease off when you get to a corner. 

It comes only with a six-speed DSG gearbox.

The Golf R gets quad exhausts to mark it our from the rest of the Golf Estate range. 

Various driving modes can be selected through the Golf's large touchscreen. 

Subtle 'R' badges are dotted around the car to hint at the car's potential. 

Subtle touches such as polished mirrors add presence, without being ostentatious. 

Load capacity can be expanded by folding the rear seats. 

Aggressive front end hints at the R's potential.
