Is this the world's greatest hybrid engined car? Maker Toyota says it is...

And to prove it, the Japanese giant pulled the wraps from the model at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, squaring up to the new hybrid engined Insight from arch rival Honda.

The second generation of Prius enjoys changes to its front end which is nowfeatures more distinctive front lights, and a more rakish nose. The profile has also been modified to improve the cars aerodynamics.

Other changes include a more compact powertrain, which means even greater space for passengers, plus a larger boot.

The petrol-electric engine has been enhanced too. The old 1.5-litre petrol engine has been replaced by a new 1.8 and this will work alongside a better performing and more efficient nickel hydride battery pack.

This combined effort means the new Prius will, return around 75mpg and emit less than 100g/km of C02.

All this will come at a cost though, when the new Prius is released in October prices will start from £18,225.

Further details to follow after the new Prius is officially unveiled...
