Renault Roadster Breezes In

Look what's blown into view. This is Renault's newest roadster, called the Wind. And while the name might not sound too clever, the seating arrangement certainly is. The sportster is actually a three-seater, as the centrepiece between the two chairs can be taken out and placed in a slot behind them to create an extra seat.

The curved styling is also important, as the firm's design boss Patrick Le Qu΃©ment explained that future Renault cars are likely to have similar flowing lines and simple interiors. Although it doesn't look as though the Wind will be blowing into a showroom soon, Le Qu΃©ment told Auto Express: "I love this type of car and have proposed building one before. But even though it's a realistic proposition, the Wind isn't the start of a production model."

Another innovative feature is the use of two radiators, which allow the roadster to have such a low front. This not only gives a sporty look, but could help designers comply with expected pedestrian protection rules. As with Renault's other concept cars, the Wind is driveable. It's built on the company's new B platform, which underpins the Nissan Micra and will also be used by the next-generation Clio.

Under the bonnet is a 136bhp 2.0-litre engine mated to a six-speed gearbox, and the Wind does the 0-60mph dash in a respectable 8.5 seconds.

The newcomer will make its debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show, where, insiders have suggested, it will appear alongside a second concept.
