These are our first pictures of the Peugeot 308 GTI, spotted on test in France.
At the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this month, Peugeot showcased the 308 R. It was concept car designed to take on the mighty VW Golf GTI, however, while that car was pure fantasy it did preview a hotter version of the family-friendly 308 hatchback and this is it, the 308 GTI.
Our spies spotted the sporty hatchback warm-weather testing in France and although this prototype looks largely unchanged from the standard hatchback, there are some subtle differences marking it out as the GTI.
At the front, a more aggressive bumper with revised air intakes is noticeable, along with the lower ride height, indicating a firmer suspension set-up. Round the back, there’s a restyled bumper and dual exhausts can also be seen.
As for the powertrain, nothing has yet been confirmed, but a detuned version of the 1.6-litre turbo found in the Peugeot RCZ R could be adopted. A power output is unlikely to be as extreme as the 267bhp in the RCZ R but between 200bhp to 220bhp is possible.
A launch for the 308 GTI has been rumored for mid 2014 with prices expected to be in the region of £23,500. Undercutting the VW Golf GTI by around £3,000.
