Bigtrak XTR review

The smash hit programmable car from the eighties, Bigtrak, is back for 2012 – and you can drive it with your smartphone

The manufacturer claims the design has been overhauled, with the major difference being that the new Bigtrak XTR does without the original’s blue headlamp. But the retro six-wheeler can still turn on its axis in 30-degree stages.

If you want to set commands the traditional Bigtrak way, you can use the keypad on the back of the tank-like design. It remembers up to 16 commands.

But in a modern touch, the XTR can be controlled by iPad, iPhone or Android smartphone. Download the free app, and you can use the touchscreen on your device to steer it.

There’s a new smart load bay which recognises when an item is placed on it and when it’s been removed. Plus, two accessory ports let you use add-ons – like a wireless camera or missile launcher – at the same time.

Images from the camera can be beamed back to your computer in real-time, via Bluetooth. The software – which works on Windows PCs and Macs – also lets you programme and drive the Bigtrak remotely.
