A new VW Camper has pitched up. This four-person tent, based on the classic Sixties van, is child’s play to erect, and is guaranteed to cause a stir on the camp site.

The lightweight aluminium poles click together in minutes to form a frame. With this in place, you simply slide the outer layer over the top, and clip it in at the bottom. Then, secure the sides with the Velcro tabs and peg the outer tent down. After that, you head inside, clipping the inner bedroom tents into place and pegging the base down, before connecting the guy ropes outside.

Once it’s erected, the exact scale tent is spacious, although we’d have liked to see some kind of awning. All the space inside is devoted to sleeping, so there’s nowhere for wet shoes.

Taking the tent down is just as simple, and all the kit fits easily back in the bag, which isn’t too heavy to carry around.

At £300, we’re not sure it’s great value for money, but if the feedback we received on
a recent family scout camp is anything to go by, this tent will sell on its cool factor and novelty alone. One fan told us: “£300 is £10,000 less than a real one!”

Verdict

Rating: ★★★★
What is it?
Novel camping accessory styled on an iconic classic.
Problems?
Pricey, high side catches wind so it feels as if it could tip, no awning.
Why buy?
Head-turning looks, very easy to put up, sleeps four, simple to store.
