Battery charger

Keep your car battery in top condition.

As car electronics have got more sophisticated, so have the batteries and chargers needed to keep them in peak condition. We took eight of the latest generation units to find the best, looking not just at charging but conditioning modes and practical aspects such as instructions, clips and leads. Our full test is here.

Our winner
CTEK MXS 3.6
Price: £49.95
Contact: www.ctek.com
Although the mini marvel MXS 3.6 is rated only for 3.6A, it packs a punch, reviving powerpacks quickly from very low levels. There is a series of modes to charge without damage, and the manufacturer hasn’t ignored the practical side, either, including fully insulated clips, decent leads and a permanent battery connection.

Commended
Ring SmartCharge +4
Price: £46.95
Contact: www.ringautomotive.co.uk
Car electrics specialist Ring gets closest to our winner’s gold standard, and this well made unit is a real threat. It charges in three stages and includes a soft start mode to prevent damage. It can’t match the CTEK’s overall package, including a flying lead, and has to settle for a commendation.

CTEK Multi XS 4003
Price: £74.95
Contact: www.ctek.com
Next up in the range from the MXS 3.6, the 4003 can handle packs up to 140Ah. Its eight-stage charging is easy to follow via LEDs, and it revived cells from under 2V. Add long leads with a covered connector for clips or a permanent flying lead, and it deserves a commendation.
