The Hand Pump Pressure Washer claims to be the ideal eco-friendly way to wash your car, because it uses much less water than a conventional hose and requires no electricity supply. We tried out the 20-litre two-wheeled version.

Filling the washer’s tank is simple, via an opening at the top. Generating the pressure to work the washer requires a bit more effort, though. The plunger handle at the top of the tank needs to be pumped up and down quite a few times to compress the air inside.

Locking the mechanism is trickier still. You depress the handle fully, then twist it through 90 degrees. It can be a struggle.

The extending lance is useful, although the hose that attaches it to the tank is a little short for convenience. The lance’s trigger can be locked in place, so you don’t have to keep your finger on the button, which is a plus. We also like the fact it has wheels.

However, the tank’s design – it looks like a turkey from some angles – is a bit bulky, and takes up a lot of space. What really lets the Hand Pump Pressure Washer down, though, is the pressure – or lack of it. Even with a full tank of water and lots of pumping, the jet wouldn’t blast the brake dust from our alloy wheels.

It’s ideal for spraying a fine mist of water to give your car a rinse, but it’s no replacement for a real pressure washer.

Verdict

Rating: ★★
What's good?
Well priced water source with extendable lance. Big water tank means it should last a long time.
Not so good?
Hose is a bit on the short side, water pressure is limited, tricky to lock pump handle down.
