Analogue tread depth gauges

We pick the best analogue tread depth gauges

RAC Tyre Service Kit RACHP310

Easy-to-read scales are crucial on tread depth gauges – you need to see the legal limit and markings clearly. Good instructions help.

We measured two tyres, rating accuracy against an MoT-standard gauge. We wanted to read the measurement to within 0.1mm; metric and Imperial scales scored extra. After noting their size – gauges must fit under a wheelarch – we dropped them on the floor and took the measurement to test build quality. Price was also a factor.

Our analogue tread depth gauge champ is in the RAC’s well priced Tyre Service Kit. The Ring RTG2 is cheaper, but its 1.6mm indicator isn’t very clear. If money was no object, we’d have the Laser 2962.
