Essentially, socks are textile bags that slip over the tyres on the driven axle, and they proved a match for the winter tyres in our traction tests.

Unlike the chains, we had no problems at speed or when the wheels were spinning, plus the ride was smooth. The socks also proved quick and easy to fit and remove.

The only drawback is that there were signs of wear, even after our brief tests. But still the best winter tyre alternative.
