Safest MPV

VW Sharan and SEAT Alhambra

Safest MPV

If you’re buying a large MPV, then a five-star safety record is likely to be near the top of your priority list.

These versatile, family friendly seven-seaters are often loaded with precious human cargo, so a top Euro NCAP score brings real peace of mind to potential buyers.

Leading the way in the latest tests were the Volkswagen Sharan and SEAT Alhambra, which posted identical scores across the board. This should come as no surprise, as the two models are visually and mechanically identical.

That means you get the same sturdy passenger cell, providing excellent protection for adults and children. And when you consider the bluff nose, the seven-seaters put in respectable performances in the pedestrian protection assessments. Finally, an electronic safety net including ESP and seatbelt reminders meant an impressive 71 per cent tally for Safety Assist – only the lack of a speed limiter denied the VW Group twins a perfect score.

There’s nothing to separate the rather bland-looking VW and SEAT on the road or in terms of practicality. Both feature sliding rear side doors, which make access to the second and third row of seats a breeze, even in tight parking spaces.

The cabin is fuss-free, as well as spacious, solidly put together and packed with useful storage cubbies.

Fold all the seats flat, and you’ll create a generous 2,297-litre load area.

On the move, strong comfort and refinement are matched by decent performance and poise. The ride in both cars is pleasingly smooth, while noise is kept to a minimum. Turn into a corner

and you’ll discover precise steering and confidence-inspiring grip. The Alhambra and Sharan feature  the same line-up of petrol and diesel engines, with the muscular 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI delivering the most compelling mix of performance and fuel efficiency. So, given that there’s nothing between our duo when it comes to safety, practicality and driving dynamics, which one should you choose?

Well, if you can live without the upmarket appeal of the VW badge, then the SEAT steals the honours. It’s cheaper to buy and yet comes equally as well equipped – and is a safe place to put your cash.
