Mazda has revealed plans to expand its SUV line-up in Europe with the confirmation of several new SUV models, three of which will come to the UK within the next two years.

One of the new cars will be the long-awaited rotary range-extender version of the MX-30, currently only available as a pure electric car. This will be introduced in the first half of 2022.

However, the brand has also confirmed two new SUVs in what the brand calls its ‘Large Product Group,’ using a new scalable platform that will be used across several international markets.

The new CX-60 and CX-80 SUVs will come to Europe and the UK, the CX-60 a two-row SUV and the CX-80 a three-row variant of the same model, possibly making use of a longer wheelbase to offer seven seats.

The CX-60 and its 80 variant won’t be a replacement for the CX-5. They’ll be positioned above the brand’s mid-size SUV and will crown the line-up in Europe, when they arrive by 2023. So think of them as rivals for the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and SEAT Tarraco

Plug-in hybrid power has been confirmed for the CX-60 and 80 duo, which will make use of a four-cylinder petrol engine with battery and electric motor assistance. Mazda will also launch six-cylinder versions of the new models, using a new Skyactiv-X straight-six petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid assistance. 48-volt diesel power has also been confirmed.

Wider-bodied variants of the two new SUVs are planned for other markets such as the United States, and will be badged CX-70 and CX-90. A car from the brand’s Small Platform Group will also be launched in North America and other select non-European markets, badged CX-50.

Mazda has also reiterated its plans to launch a number of pure-electric vehicles from 2025 onwards, making use of a dedicated battery electric platform.
