Hankook Ventus Evo review

Impressive ability in the wet allied with excellent refinement help the new Hankook to a strong, impressive third overall.

Another impressive new tyre. The Hankook didn’t score any outright wins, but the wet tests in particular placed it close to the top of the table for the most part, setting it up for a well earned third overall.

Kicking things off, it got within a metre of the best tyre in the crucial wet braking test and despite managing only seventh in wet cornering, it was superb on the wet handling circuit. It served up the ideal blend of strong grip, braking and traction with reassuring composure and fine throttle adjustability, which meant that it could find and hold the perfect line. Its lap time was a mere 0.2sec behind the best and it backed this up with second place in both aquaplaning tests.

It wasn’t so hot in the dry tests, with sixth in braking, over 2m behind the best, and seventh in handling. It lacked the grip and traction needed to deliver clean, precise laps to challenge the best, taking more persuasion to find the line and needing a moment before getting on the throttle at corner exits. Rolling resistance was only fair, but refinement was another strong suit, the Hankook recording low cabin levels and being able to soften impacts and traverse broken asphalt quietly.
