New SsangYong Torres EVX: compact all-electric crossover arrives

SsangYong has pulled the covers off its second-ever EV, the Torres EVX

The upcoming Torres SUV was revealed last year but now SsangYong has revealed the all-electric EVX version for 2023. The car will publicly debut at the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show on 30 March along with several concept cars.

SsangYong’s plan to have a big presence at Korea’s biggest motor show isn’t circumstantial. The budget car maker narrowly avoided liquidation in 2022, being bought just in time by fellow Korean firm KG Group. As such SsangYong will soon change its name to KG Mobility and while an online teaser still categorises the Torres EVX as a SsangYong, the name doesn’t appear on the car itself.

The Torres EVX looks very different to the internal-combustion engined Torres, despite sharing the same platform and body. Some all-electric alternatives fill in the grille and call it a day but SsangYong has given the EVX a bespoke front end with thin LED strips for headlights, a Jeep-style grille with six (crucially not seven like a Jeep) individual strips and a completely revised bumper.

Inside the EVX there are more changes with a new dual-screen setup plus a more minimalist layout with fewer buttons. The same wheel as the petrol-powered Torres is carried over to the EV.

The Torres should use the same platform as the similarly-sized Korando, meaning the EVX is likely to borrow technology from the firm’s first electric car - the Korando e-Motion. This would mean a front-mounted electric motor powered by a 61.5kWh battery and a range around 211 miles.

Given pricing starts at over £30k for the Korando e-Motion, we expect the beefier Torres EVX, which SsangYong says commits to the brand’s “Powered by Toughness” design language, to edge nearer to the £40,000 mark. There’s no announcement from SsangYong or indeed KG Mobility on if the Torres EVX will come to the UK.
