Performance-inspired Toyota C-HR GR Sport unveiled

Toyota C-HR crossover has been handed to in-house tuning company Gazoo - who fitted it with some sporty body panels and fresh suspension

Toyota has launched a new GR Sport trim-level for the C-HR crossover. When it goes on sale next year it will compete directly with the SEAT Ateca FR Sport and Ford Kuga ST-Line.

Prices for the new Toyota C-HR GR Sport are yet to be confirmed, but given the Yaris GR Sport added £3,000 to the hatchback’s base-price, we’re anticipating a starting price of around £29,000 for the crossover.

The GR Sport trim is just a cosmetic makeover, so there’s no extra performance; Toyota has added a more aggressive body kit, a new dark chrome radiator grille and a set of larger 19-inch alloy wheels.

There’s also some fresh black body cladding, gloss black headlamp surrounds and “GR Sport” badging dotted around the car’s panels. The exterior makeover is rounded off with a choice of eight two-tone paint finishes – each of which come with a contrasting black roof.

Inside, buyers get a sports steering wheel “GR Sport” branded treadplates and a choice of either Alcantara or fabric seat upholstery – both of which feature red and grey stitching. Heated seats and rear privacy glass also come as standard, while a premium JBL stereo system can be specced as an optional extra.

There are a handful of chassis tweaks, such as stiffer springs and dampers, thicker anti-roll bars and a revised steering system – all of which Toyota says will help to limit body roll and make the C-HR more engaging to drive.

Buyers will have access to the same naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol hybrid engines as the standard C-HR – meaning there’ll be a 1.8-litre unit with 120bhp and 2.0-litre unit with 181bhp. Both engines will send drive to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox and both return claimed fuel economy in excess of 50mpg.
