Revealed in these official pictures, the Citroen C4 Aircross joins the C4 and DS4 hatchbacks, as well as the C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso MPVs, and caters for those customers looking for a little extra room and some off-road ability.

Based on the Mitsubishi ASX, the Aircross will take on rivals such as the VW Tiguan and Nissan Qashqai. The entry level model will feature front-wheel drive only, whereas all other versions will be fitted with a clever switchable four-wheel drive system.

A small toggle behind the gear lever allows the driver to select one of three modes. A two-wheel drive setting is designed to maximise fuel consumption during normal on-road conditions, a four-wheel drive setting juggles torque between the front and rear axles for maximum traction and a third mode locks both axles for coping with more severe off-road situations.

With its rounded front end, bonnet edge that merges seamlessly with the slim grille and stepped taillights, the Aircross has plenty in common with the C4 and DS4. Its vertical LED running lights will give it a unique look in your rear-view mirror, while the partially blacked-out C-pillars are a cue taken from the DS5.

On the inside there’s space for five and a 442-litre boot - 83-litres more than the DS4. A large panoramic glass roof heightens the sense of space and is illuminated at night by integrated  LED lights.

Engine choices include 113bhp 1.6-litre and 148bhp 2.0-litre petrol engines, while 108bhp 1.6-litre HDi and 148bhp 1.8-litre HDi engines complete the range.

It’s too early to name prices, but based on the Mitsubishi ASX expect an entry-level model to cost around £16,000 when the Aircross goes on sale in the second half of 2012.

How many C4 versions do Citröen need!?

C4, DS4, C4 Picasso, C4 grand Picasso, now this, the C4 aircross! Kind of wonder even more what's the point of the DS4?

Good on you Auto Express for telling us straight up that it is based on the Mitsubishi ASX, although has been neatly restyled by Citroen, there's no mention of this at all on Autocar's website!

Better looking than ASX

This certainly looks more interesting and modern than the ASX. And anyway, why should there be a limit to the number of C4 versions Citroen produces? Surely this means more choice for the consumer, and that can only be a good thing!

I agree, erly5

Yep I didn't describe it all quite so well, I am all for every C4 going, more the better! Think I was just a bit surprised by how many versions are possible, just, all the others are based on the C4 flatform, this one is from an ASX; which is ok, and really don't care if it's from Mitsubishi, they can make great cars, (the ASX was second best seller here in Norway in August), it will work well.

Only feel that the DS4 does not really have a place, if I wanted an upmarket hatch I would buy an Alfa Guilietta (can't spell it), the Citroen is jumped up, looks good, but this Aircross version makes it a little bit not needed

Better front

Thank heavens there is now a version of the ASX with a better looking front. However, I have seen renders that looked better again. Leave out the gaping bits and you have a better look.
