Wind-up glovebox torches tested

A wind-up torch will come to your rescue if you break down at night. So which should you keep in your glovebox? We test 12

Wind-up glovebox torches tested

A must-have glovebox accessory in case of emergency is a wind-up torch – they’re essential if you have a problem late at night.

Long-lasting, energy-efficient LEDs (light emitting diodes) mean that just a minute spent charging one of these torches can give you anything up to an hour of light to work in – longer if your model has a battery-saving mode.

But which of the many wind-up torches on the market is the shining star? We cranked up

a dozen of them to find out.

How we tested them

A good glovebox torch has to offer an acceptable compromise between a wide beam for under-bonnet work and power for long distances – in case you need to walk for help.

We’ve toughened up our test since last time (Issue 1,098), assessing our torches with a light meter over several distances and angles, plus measuring how long they lasted after a minute of charging.

The samples were also checked for extras like additional charging methods, energy-saving modes and the ability to power a mobile phone.

Price was our final factor, although none of the figures quoted includes delivery.

Verdict

It's not cheap, but the Ventus Eco Pro is the complete package, with three ways of charging, the brightest beam and durability that rivals can only dream of.

Our second-placed torch, the Power Plus Barracuda, is more affordable but still features a bright beam, great stamina and solar charging. It was very close for the final podium spot among the budget options, although Halfords just shades it thanks to a keen price and a good result in our tough durability test.

2. Power Plus Barracuda
3. Halfords LED Dynamo Wind-Up Torch
