Peugeot Expert Tepee

Van-based people carrier offers room for nine at a value price

Want a spacious seven-seat MPV that’s versatile and affordable? There’s plenty on offer at the moment to tempt family buyers, but the Peugeot Expert Tepee is unlikely to be top of the list – which is a shame, as it has a lot going for it.

Admittedly, the looks aren’t a strong point. It’s based on the Expert van, so the boxy shape is more utilitarian than lifestyle. However, the Expert did win the coveted Van of The Year 2008 award, and Peugeot has been quick to exploit its potential as a passenger carrier.

The angular lights form part of a sharp front end, while colour-coded bumpers and rubbing strips lift things, although they can’t disguise the Tepee’s commercial origins.

What this means is that practicality and space are excellent. Thanks to the square shape, there’s loads of luggage room in the back, and it’s ideal for more serious load carrying, too. But where the Peugeot excels is when it comes to catering for families.

With twin sliding side doors, access is easy, and the Tepee is capable of carrying up to nine passengers in comfort, thanks to three rows of fully adjustable seats. The second and third rows can be folded and used to create a flat surface. There are no clever fold-flat mechanisms, but all the chairs can be removed if necessary.

You get masses of space, even with a full complement of passengers on board, and the driving environment is more car-like than you’d expect, with clear dials and a high-mounted gearlever. So, is the Tepee a vehicle that you could live with every day?

Well, the ride is surprisingly good, and the 2.0 HDi diesel engine is punchy and pulls well – we prefer it over the smaller 1.6-litre HDi. The Tepee is never going to be a match for more conventional people carriers in terms of dynamics, but it feels safe and secure in bends.

There is a choice of two wheelbases (3,000mm or 3,122mm) and two trim levels (Comfort and Leisure). It’s the prices that make the Peugeot an unsung hero, though. The entry-level version starts at £19,057.

We’d recommend the higher-spec Leisure, which gets passenger and side airbags, air-con, colour-coded bumpers and electric mirrors for £22,457. That’s great value, and with economy of 43.5mpg, you are guaranteed low running costs, too.
