Safest compact executive: Mercedes C-Class

Brimming with hi-tech safety kit, the C-Class really looks after you.

Mercedes C-class

The C-Class has always been a safe bet – but the latest model is the best of the bunch in the compact executive class. With a five-star EuroNCAPrating it certainly upholds Mercedes' reputation for safety. Equipmentincludes seven airbags, an anti-whiplash head restraint system andelectronic stability control.

A key component is a system called Pre-Safe, which uses ESP and brake-assist system sensor to detect loss of grip, harsh steering movements, panic braking and emergency stops. Pre-Safe then reacts to protect occupants, by automatically tensioniong the front seat belts to provide bettersupport. To further reducethe risk of injury from flying debris, the electric side windows andoptional panoramic fixed glass sunroof also close automatically.

Also worthy of commendation in this class are the Alfa Romeo 159 – top of the class when it comes to child protection and also a five-star rating for adult protection  – and the Lexus IS, which wins the gong for best pedestrian protection, according to EuroNCAP.
