They dominate the four-seat convertible class, but can the revised Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet edge ahead of the Audi A5 Cabriolet?

Premium four-seater cabriolets provide the ultimate combination of luxury, comfort, practicality and wow factor. They’re more flexible and better value than a roadster, yet more exciting than a regular saloon, so it’s no surprise that the market for high-end convertibles is booming.

And at the top of the sales charts, the Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet has been locked in a battle with the Audi A5 Cabriolet in recent years. But now, the Mercedes has been facelifted, with a dramatic new nose, more equipment and revised engines aiming to give it an edge.

Stealing a march on the Audi won’t be easy, though. While it’s two years since the car had a substantial revamp, it remains as popular as ever. And for the price of the four-cylinder Mercedes E250 CDI, buyers can get a beefier 3.0-litre V6 A5 with quattro four-wheel drive in desirable S line Special Equipment trim.

Both sun seekers offer four-seater open-air thrills and lots of luxury, and there’s under £1,000 between them. So it’s set to be a close fight.

Verdict

If you’re looking to transport your family with the wind in your hair, neither of these cars will disappoint. Both offer slick drivetrains, comfortable cabins and affordable running costs. 

But it’s the new Mercedes that takes the victory, as it’s benefited hugely from what has clearly been a substantial facelift package. Although both cars tick the desirability box, the E-Class gets our vote.

As is often the case in head-to-heads like this, it’s the details that separate the two. Clever touches such as the AirCap wind deflector and automatic rear headrests ensure the E250 CDI delivers a turbulence-free experience, even on motorways, and give it the edge as the better convertible here.

And while the Audi A5 is faster, the E-Class is more rewarding to drive. With its superior balance, more communicative steering and smoother ride quality, the Mercedes feels the more natural and enjoyable choice from behind the wheel.

Finally, there’s the question of value for money. The range-topping A5 Cabriolet comes with a long list of equipment as standard, but unfortunately not enough to swing the verdict in its favour. With its lower price tag and keener running costs, the E-Class further extends its winning margin.
